GSM Alliance Applauds "World Smart Phone Service"

GSM Technology Allows Travelers Convenient, Worldwide Wireless Service With One Phone

NEW YORK, June 2, 1998 -- True global wireless communication has arrived with the introduction of the first portable phone capable of operating around the world. The GSM Alliance today hailed the introduction of a new "World Smart Phone Service" and the breakthrough in international wireless communications it represents.

The first-ever GSM-standard phone capable of operating on multiple frequency bands was announced today in New York.

With a new "World Smart Phone Service," international travelers will be able to use the same phone in more than 110 countries around the world, eliminating the need to change phones to match the local wireless phone frequency. This extends the concept of anytime, anywhere communications to a new level.

"The announcement of a truly global phone is a breakthrough event, one that firmly establishes GSM-based service providers as the technology leader," said Don Warkentin, chairman of the GSM Alliance and president and CEO of Chicago-based Aerial Communications, Inc.

"The affordably priced 'World Smart Phone Service' will allow consumers to place calls while overseas for rates far cheaper than those associated with calling cards or hotel charges," Warkentin added. "Individual GSM Alliance members will determine the phone brands they feel best fit the needs of their customers."

The GSM Alliance is composed of North American digital wireless telecommunications companies -- utilizing the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) technology standard -- the most widely used standard in the wireless industry.

Data, Fax, Unmatched Security Capabilities

In addition to allowing users to operate their wireless phones around the world, the GSM standard also provides data and fax capabilities. For business travelers, that means access to critical data and information whether their meetings are in London or Hong Kong or a multitude of other cities around the world.

GSM's encryption technology allows maximum security when making calls. GSM users are protected by a multi-layered security system that is unmatched in the wireless industry.

The GSM Alliance recently deepened its commitment to establishing its brand as a service differentiator for users of the GSM technology standard. Support of the first "World Smart Phone Service" blends with the GSM Alliance's overall strategy to position its technology as the worldwide standard, providing customers with advanced communications solutions superior to all others.

Individual members of the GSM Alliance will announce availability of a "World Smart Phone Service" based on their market needs. GSM Alliance members include: Aerial Communications, Inc., Airadigm Communications, Inc.; BellSouth Mobility DCS; Conestoga Wireless Company; Cook Inlet PCS; DIGIPH PCS; Microcell Telecommunications Inc.; NPI Wireless; Omnipoint Communications LLC; Pacific Bell Mobile Services; Powertel, Inc.; Western Wireless Corp.; and Wireless 2000 PCS. . The GSM Alliance works in cooperation with North American GSM equipment manufacturers: Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel and Siemens.
